Redruth is an ex-industrial town in Cornwall with a population of 15,626 and with the surrounding mining villages 42,690 making it the most populous area of Cornwall.

Redruth is a small town with big ambitions. Once the richest square mile in the UK it is now amongst the most deprived. With the closure of mines and the brewery in the town in the 1990s Redruth changed. With the opening of Kresen Kernow, Krowji, The Buttermarket and The Ladder arts, culture and heritage are now leading the regeneration of the town.

Redruth punches way above it’s weight with the biggest artist studio complex this side of Bristol, the third biggest hub for digital buisnesses in the UK, the UK’s largest heritage archive project, a beautiful cinema and theatre which is Cornwall’s biggest creative employer and half Cornwall’s Arts Council National Portfolio Organisations calling it home. Redruth attracts artists as it is the cheapest place to live and work for them in Cornwall.

Redruth is one of the areas in Cornwall where most people identify as Cornish. We are bidding for UK Town of Culture because Redruth has an important roll to play in telling the intricate story of our country which many haven’t heard.
